Traditional Literature(TL)-Originated in the stories passed down orally throughout history. This includes folk tales, fairy tales, myths, legends, and epics.
Characteristics of Traditional Literature:
~ TL is usually in the third person, meaning it is seen from the outside of the story and not inside one character's point of view.
~ Most TL stories, especially Aesop fables, have morals or themes that help the reader learn a lesson.
~ Traditional Literature stories are usually collected in an anthology, or collection of stories, since they're pretty short.
~ These stories were once passed down orally throughout history, and are now written down.
~ There are usually many stories about one supernatural character in Traditional Literature. (eg. Heracles, Paul Bunyan, Fox)
~ popular long ago
~ In Traditional Literature, there are many different versions of one classic story. We Have Noticed That:
~ TL stories are formatted so that dialogue doesn't start in a new paragraph.
~ In fable collections, new stories don't start on a new page. They usually skip a line and say the next story title. Myths and Legends: ~Mythology can be looked at two different ways: comparative mythology and Greek mythology (click to learn more; it's too hard to explain?)
~The word 'myth' is derived from the Greek word mythos meaning "speech, thought, story, myth". (See etymology of 'myth' .)
~The word 'legend' is derived from the Latin word legenda, "things to be read". (See also etymology of 'legend' )
~ Myths and legends: "Stories passed down through generations, usually about heroic individuals, spectacular events, or powerful gods. Myths represent a culture's beliefs and explain its customs; some are fictional while others may be based on real people and events."
