Characteristics of Historical Fiction:
  • Setting
    • usually takes place 40+ years ago in a realistic time (ex. Great Depression)
  • Characters
    • fictional, unreal
    • act like people of time (language, clothing, etc.)
  • Background Information
    • relatively more; on things like setting, people
    • prologue and epilogue to provide what happened in real life before and after the story
  • Perspective
    • mostly told in first person
  • Ending
    • Story usually ends when the realistic time period is ending

Another great book! Click on picture for summary
A thin, twelve year-old boy with little money and little education is growing up during the Great Depression. His clothing is ripped and he looks pale. He tells the story, talks about the past, says what is happening. There may be a prologue and/or epilogue to tell about the real person the story is based on. The story ends at the end of the Great Depression with the boy growing up, getting a job, and starting a family.
